Authentic 7-Layer Mexican Dip

This is one of those appetizer dips that has been around for generations. It is popular due to not only how nice it looks, but also the layers of flavor within the dip. This dip is generally served with tortilla chips, but it can be used for other foods also, for a unique flavor. This is the perfect dip for game days and all other get-togethers.

The seven layers include refried beans, green onions, tomatoes, olives, sour cream, cheese and the important guacamole. When you layer all these flavors together, nothing can ruin the rest of the day.

Your taste buds are so happy, the rest of you follows suit. Salsa can be substituted in place of the guacamole or the tomatoes.  When game day falls to our house, we make a few different appetizers to go with this dip.

Generally sausage wraps, pigs in blankets, jalapeno poppers, cheese curds and potato skins. No one leaves our house hungry or disappointed, unless our team loses!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I have to put in refried beans?

The beans serve as a nice stabilizer and base for the rest of the dip. I would imagine you could make a black bean salsa and use that. I have also used a taco flavored meat in place of the refried beans.

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

This dip can be made up to 24 hours in advance. When you are done putting it together, wrap it tightly with plastic film.

            Can I store this dip?

The 7 layer dip will last for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, as long as it is kept in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in plastic.

            Can I freeze a 7 layer dip?

No, I do not recommend freezing the dip. The sour cream will likely separate and the cheese will become soggy.

Can I substitute any of these items for others?

Yes, the refried beans could be switched out for a black bean salsa. The guacamole could be swapped out for finely chopped lettuce. The sour cream layer could be mixed with 4 ounces of cream cheese and then the taco seasoning. If your crew likes onions, feel free to add onions. The most important point of the dip is to have the 7 layers, preferably in the same colors.
