Allow me to introduce you to these delicious sweet lil smokies wrapped in bacon! These delicious smokies are a take on a classic appetizer that you may have had during the holidays or while watching a sporting event. The difference here is the sweet, salty, and savory combination that is sure to have these eaten up in no time.
There’s a reason lil smokies and bacon are a classic hit. They are the ultimate combination between the flavors of sausage and bacon. The sugar takes them up a notch as does a surprise cayenne flavor.
I have made these for family, work neighbors, kids, etc. more than a few times and they never go begging. I leave out the pepper when serving to small kids, but they aren’t too spicy for kids that are a little older. These sweet smokies in a bacon blanket are perfect to make in huge batches, freeze, and just take out as needed. They microwave beautifully! I have a friend who uses my recipe for game night at her house and does just that and thaws out as needed. They are perfect too with other finger foods and pair great with either a cold beer or a delicious lemonade.
SHOPPING FOR LIL SMOKIES
Lil smokies are very easy to find! I hope you have tried them before and often enough that you have seen them in your local grocery store or around town. These cute little sausages are usually in an airtight container in either the meat, breakfast, or deli area of your store. If you have never tried lil smokies though, then this recipe is going to be even more amazing for you.
NUMBER OF SMOKIES PER BAG
From the packages I have bought, I would say most packages contain around 40-50 lil smokies. The serving guide on this recipe is about 4-5 smokies to each person. If you are planning a party, want to make several batches, etc. then keep that in mind as you buy your smokies in the store.
MAKING SWEET SMOKIES IN A BLANKET BEFOREHAND
If you can stand the wait, I recommend making these smokies ahead of time! The glaze is even more phenomenal the next day and even out of the freezer after a warmup.
Reheat – Already cooked smokies can stay in the fridge for three days. Reheat in the oven for 10-15 minutes when ready to finish them off.
Fridge – These smokies do well in the fridge for three days uncooked. Just follow regular heating instructions when you are ready to make them!
Freezing – Place the uncooked bacon wrapped smokies in a freezer safe container or bag in the freezer until time. Add 4-9 minutes to ensure they are fully cooked.
