Why do I call this Trusted Sweet Potato Pie? Because simply, it is the only recipe I trust to turn out the way it is meant to be. Sweet Potato Pie is a staple for dinner tables around the Holidays. For an event so special, the pie should be just as special. This one is the one! Traditionally, the Southern states have Sweet Potato Pie, the Northern States are traditional with Pumpkin Pie. It would be great if everyone would start having both, or interchanging them on the holidays. Sweet Potatoes always have gotten a bad rap. It is time we all start treating them as equals! They deserve to be shared with others. Although, I do like to keep this to myself and not share.
Sweet Potato Pie is quite similar to the traditional pumpkin pie. The taste is very similar, in fact all you basically change is to eliminate the pumpkin filling and replace it with sweet potato mashed. Plus, the surprise addition to make it the best, is we will add browned butter to the mix.
We do not add an abundance of spices to this pie, we want the sweet potato flavor to stand out. This pie can be lightly covered and stored in your refrigerator for up to 3 days.
A sweet potato pie can be eaten plain, you can top it with a pecan and brown sugar, with butter topping, or with a classic scoop of whipped cream topping.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Should I use fresh sweet potatoes?
Actually, bake the sweet potatoes first. Plus, baking the potato rather than boiling it, will enhance the flavor instead of watering it down.
Can I make this pie ahead of time?
You can make Sweet Potato Pie up to one day ahead of serving.
Can I use canned yams or sweet potatoes?
I do not suggest this. The flavors are so different. It is not much work to bake and then scoop out the insides.
