Chapter Books for Beginning Readers

Great books for kids

I've noticed that I have a tendency to keep lists. There's the standard grocery list, chore list, school list, etc. Then I started keeping lists for school records. One of those lists was the books that TJ read. This is a list of her first chapter books. She wasn't ready for full on books with lots of words and no pictures (and she still grumbles about that!). These are the books that have helped her climb that "chapter book" hill.

First Chapter books (short chapters, many pictures):

  • An I Can Read Book series, level 3
  • Young Cam Jansen series
  • Annie and Snowball series by Cynthia Rylant
  • Henry and Mudge series by Cynthia Rylant
  • Poppleton series by Cynthia Rylant
  • Mr. Putter and Tabby series by Cynthia Rylant
  • Mercy Watson series by Kate Di Camillo

Next step chapter books: (fewer pictures, longer chapters, more pages)

  • Rainbow Magic series
  • Cul-de-Sac kids series
  • Magic Treehouse series
  • The Imagination Station series
  • Cam Jansen series
  • The Tiara Club series
  • American Girl series
  • Neverland chapter books, Dave Barry

There are many more books and series out there for young readers entering the world of chapter books. I've just listed the ones that we've enjoyed the most.
