Glazed Doughnut Strawberry Shortcake

            This is one of those desserts you have likely heard a lot about but were not sure if you wanted to try it. Trust me, this is one for the record books, you really do want to make this tonight! It is everything you want from a shortcake, the cake, the strawberries and the whipped topping. The difference is this is not Angel food cake, nor is it biscuits. This is even better than both of those.

            Now you could take the time to make your own doughnuts for this recipe. But, I highly recommend stopping at the local bakery in your area and just picking some glazed donuts up. This makes it so much quicker to make, and the faster I can put strawberry shortcake in my mouth, the happier that I am. Now, I am not going to say that this is better than the true Southern style Strawberry shortcake. To me nothing can compare equally to that. However, this! This is almost heaven!

            You could also make a strawberry mixture by mashing some of the strawberries and adding a tsp of granulated sugar. Mix it well, I use a beater to break up the strawberries and get the juice flowing. I love having more of a soft strawberry topping than the solid pieces. But, that is just me. You can do yours how you choose.

            I have also made these as open faced Strawberry shortcakes. This means I will only use half of the doughnut per shortcake. That is considered healthy, correct?

            Should I use fresh strawberries or frozen?

Either or is perfectly okay. Much of the decision will be based on how much work you want to do before you get to eat the dessert.

            Do you recommend Glazed Raised donuts or Cake donuts for this?

First, I am not sure if I have ever come across glazed cake donuts at our bakery. Those must be some that sell out before I get there when I go. I would seriously suggest buying the Glazed, Raised donuts. These are just so fluffy and soft.

            Should I use pre-made whipping cream?

Another decision that is yours to make. Timing is everything with this dessert! Personally, I love homemade food more than anything else in life. So I do take the time to make my own.

What do you need to make Glazed Doughnut Strawberry Shortcake

            4 large Raised, Glazed Donuts

            1 quart strawberries, washed and sliced

            2 cups of heavy whipping cream

            1 tsp vanilla extract

            ½ cup confectioners sugar

How to make Glazed Doughnut Strawberry Shortcake

FIRST STEP:

Wash the strawberries and slice them

Slice the glazed donuts in half horizontally

SECOND STEP:

In a mixing bowl combine the heavy whipping cream, the vanilla extract and the confectioners sugar

Beat until soft peaks form

THIRD STEP:

Place the bottom half of a doughnut on the plate

Place a scoop of whipped topping on the bottom half

FOURTH STEP:

Spoon some sliced strawberries on top of the whipping cream

FIFTH STEP:

Place another dollop of whipping cream on top of the strawberries

Place the top half of the doughnut on top
