Chili cheese dogs, a favorite summertime food for all kids! By all kids, I mean the young and the old. I do not care how old I get, I feel like a kid every time I get to eat chili cheese dogs. With this recipe, I tweaked it to be a little different. It may or may not be a little cleaner to eat versus a classic chili cheese dog. This time I may have outdone myself! I have successfully turned a family favorite into a casserole. To me there really is not difference in flavors, it is just so much easier to eat this way.
You all know me well enough to know that if there is an easier way to make something that is what I will do. This time instead of using my own beef chili recipe, I grabbed two cans from our local store.
There are so many variations or alternate versions of this recipe. This means that you can add to it, take away from it, this would be your own version.
That is the fun of casseroles, you can change it to the exact foods you like. We do not know how it will taste until we try.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I make this ahead of time?
This is a wonderful casserole to make ahead of time and store in the freezer. I do suggest that you bake it before you freeze it. The crescent roll dough will not last even being frozen. They will become soggy and unable to bake to a crispy state when baking.
Can I make this with Tater tots?
You could certainly make this with tater tots surrounding the hot dogs and topped with chili.
Can I change the meat?
I have used little smokies previously. I have also used bratwurst and sausage. Either way this tastes wonderful.
How do I store this dish?
Once the casserole has cooled completely, place it into an airtight container and you can keep it in the refrigerator for up to four days.
How do I freeze this?
Allow the casserole to cool completely. Then cover with aluminum foil tightly. You can freeze for up to 3 months. To serve, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven.
One popular variation to this classic casserole is to place the chili at the bottom of the pan, layer that with sliced hotdogs on top of the chili and sprinkle with the shredded cheese. Then place either rolled out crescent dough or biscuits on top and then bake.
