Think back to the last time you had a caramel apple. It may have been many years, just like me! Growing up it was a treat to go to the County Fair and that is the treat we were given at the fair.
I learned then just what the taste of a crisp, yet soft and gooey treat really was. Caramel Apples and the County Fair were a sign that Fall had come.
I was sitting here daydreaming about my childhood when I remembered Caramel Apples. I wanted to find another way to make them, one that was easier on the teeth, but not too easy. When I thought of this, I was smiling ear to ear. My first thought was ooh, more caramel!
This method took me less time, I enjoy it much more, and by slicing into the wedges, I am sure that I do not eat as much. Yay for my waistline!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I use a different type of Apple, or does it have to be Granny Smith?
Granny Smith is my favorite, I always have some in the house so that is what I grabbed and besides they just taste best with caramel.
Can I use the square caramels?
You certainly could, it is more work with having to unwrap, melt with a little cream and then pour it into the apple half, but that is up to you! I wanted recipes that are fast, easy and taste great too!
Do I have to keep these in the refrigerator?
Actually, you can if you would like too, I leave mine on the counter. The caramel is not overly hard.
Can I freeze Caramel Apples?
Yes, you can. Be sure to wrap them tightly, or place them in a ziploc bag that is freezer safe, or place them into an airtight container. They will last for 6 months in the freezer.
What type of caramel Sauce should I use?
You want one that is thick, one that will harden. I generally make a homemade version using granulated sugar, butter and heavy cream. I do not use too much of the cream though as I do want it to harden for this.
