I grew up attending girl scouts and we called foil dinners like this Hobo dinners. When you are camping in the woods, making fires to cook over, these are some of the most versatile types of dinners you could make.
Now foil dinners can be made all the time. You could bake them in the oven, cook them on the grill, or make a campfire and cook them next to the open flames. Either way you cook, the flavors combine inside the foil packet and blend with each other perfectly.
You may think of the common hamburger, onion, potato and carrot foil packs, yes, me too. I have made them numerous times for the family. They always bring about a smile. This is a play on those, still simply made, but even more flavorful.
It really is a simple dinner idea and it only takes 30 minutes to cook.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Which type of steak should I use?
I have tried flank steak, ribeye, sirloin and I find the one that works the best in the foil pack dinner is the top sirloin steak.
Is there a certain potato that works best?
I prefer using Yukon gold, Russets are good, but tend to flake more. The reds are not a potato to use if you want to have potatoes that hold together.
Helpful Tips:
Do not roll the foil packets really tight. You need the heat to be able to flow around the food to cook it all evenly.
Cut the potatoes into 1 inch, bite size pieces.
When cooked completely, you could top the dinners with crumbled bacon.
