Sweet and Tangy Chicken in the Crockpot

I love chicken and I most certainly love Hawaii, but my newest favorite, without having to fly in an airplane? Yep, Sweet Hawaiian Style Crockpot Chicken.  This meal has also been called Hawaiian Chicken. I just tend to call it what it reminds me of, which is a Chinese dish.

I always use the thigh pieces, then they cook in that sweet and savory sauce in the slow cooker and make the whole house smell delightful.

This recipe also closely resembles Sweet and Sour Chicken, but has no asian flavoring to it. You could very easily turn this into a version of your favorite Chinese meal. You will add some pineapple pieces, Green pepper that has been cut into chunks, a yellow bell pepper also cut into chunks and a teaspoon of ginger.

The entire preparation time is only 15 minutes. Whaaat????  Yes, you will let the slow cooker do the work for you! This is one of those set and forget meals while you go do life. When you get home, dinner is waiting for you. Well, you do know that I am kidding right? You do not have to fly to Hawaii to enjoy this meal. You can create heaven in your kitchen with very little effort.

To make this even better? It is gluten free, dairy free,  so basically one of those healthy style meals?!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I make this with different types of meats?

Try it with beef, turkey, pork or ribs. The cooking time remains the same.

Can I add vegetables?

If you have some favorites you like, go ahead and add them. Add them in the last hour of the cooking time to avoid mushy vegetables.

Can it be spicier?

Feel free to add jalapeno peppers, if you want. You could also sprinkle in some red pepper flakes or even cayenne pepper.

It is already healthy, can it get healthier?

Do not use brown sugar. Substitute with honey instead. This will reduce caloric intake.

How do I store it?

When the dish is cooled completely, it can be placed in an air tight, tightly closed container and kept in the refrigerator. It will remain good for up to 4 days.

Can I freeze the leftovers?

When cooled, cover with plastic wrap and a layer of aluminum foil, place in a tightly closed container and freeze for up to 3 months.

Serve with white rice, and if you are able and have the recipe, I bet the family would really love to have some cheese wontons with this meal. You would be the start chef! Otherwise, a dinner salad on the side is always a good and healthy choice.
